PROLOTHERAPY - treatment for ligaments, tendons, meniscus, and cartilage
Dr. Norris was trained in the Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy technique at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
What is injected?
The technique involves the injection of dextrose, prolocaine or lidocaine, and B12 which causes an inflammatory response that increases blood flow and initiates a healing process. Other solutions are also used.
Steroids are NOT used!
Research
TMJ dysfunction: 93% of patients treated considered the prolotherapy treatment to be very successful (greater than 50% pain relief). 57% noted the prolotherapy was very successful (> 75% pain relief).
Tissue Repair After Prolotherapy:
Ultrasound imaging can show tissue growth and repair. These case reports appear to confirm that prolotherapy does stimulate tissue growth in tendon (patellar), ligament (anterior talofibular), and meniscus (medial meniscus).
Prolotherapy for Knee Pain:
A reasonable and conservative approach to knee tendonitis/tendonosis, sprain-strains, instability, diagnosis of meniscal tear, patellofemoral pain syndrome including chrondromalacia patellae, as well as degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis pain. Since prolotherapy is a treatment modality that provides a long term solution rather than just palliation, it should be considered in appropriate patients prior to long term narcotic therapy or surgical intervention.

ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture provides more relief from various types of chronic pain than does usual care and should be considered a valid therapeutic option.
